Looking for a good Ceramic on Ceramic Total Hip Replacement (NOT HIP RESURFACING) surgeon in America. Also have other questions.

Reposting old question.  Did not get much response from my first post.  I don’t know what kind of THR everyone is using for long distance running and heavy weightlifting.  I think ceramic on ceramic is best due to minimal wear particles from a long run.   Not sure about heaving lifting.   Feel free to comment.

Thank you.

I had 2 buddies who had hip resurfacing at South Carolina Hip Preservation Center. Both of them had Thomas Gross as their surgeon and both were quite pleased with their results. One does a lot of heavy weight training. They had metal on metal implants. Dr. Gross has done MANY resurfacings. Is ceramic on ceramic now FDA approved in the USA? E3 physical therapy on Youtube is a 30-something year old PT who had THA. Check out his material on hip replacement. I heard of a guy on the west coast, but don’t recall his name. He also had done many. Definately go with someone who does a ton of resurfacing, as results are very technique dependent. Good luck.

      Cheers,
      Gary

Man, I googled ceramic on ceramic, and apparently they’ve been approved since 2003! A couple of generations have improved their design. Maybe contact one of the manufacturers for a list of surgeons utilizing their product? I don’t know if Dr. Gross or his associate use C-on-C.

Hello, and my knowledge base is pretty limited other than my first hand experience. I am not aware of “ceramic on ceramic” being of greater performance value. Both of my hip replacements (one each side) are plastic ball into titanium cup. I have run everything from 50 K down to seniors track meets including 2:32 for the 800 m and 5:24 for 1500 meters… Implying that I am running with a lot of “force” onto these hip prosthetics. I am 55 years old.
Also, I don’t know what heavy lifting means? Perhaps 300 pound back squats? I can tell you I am performing 200 pound trap bar squat – deadlifts without any pain but not sure if that constitutes having lifting?
My surgeons both practice in Claremont Florida; Dr. David Lucas retired and performed my replacement in December 2020 and Dr. Benjamin Miller performed my most recent in August of 2025. The former used a posterior approach and the latter used in interior approach. Similar success with both though different surgical and recovery experiences. I would consider myself a better than average recovery example. Would also consider myself tougher than the average person, namely, implying that also means stubborn and stupid at times too 😉
Hope that helps and let me know if further follow up is needed 🙂
