Very Post surgery

Debra here, 65 year old female athlete who just had THR surgery 9 hours ago. It”s 2:00am, I’m in the hospital and can’t sleep ! The pain is more than I thought it would be. Had an Oxi a hour ago, and one 4 hours before that  but hasn’t really helped. I have a friend , male who just had it done 5 weeks ago, same surgeon, same procedure, he felt great. Just Tylenol, no oxi. I thought I was in good shape but feel helpless! I know it’s early, but want some input!  Thanks for reading…

Oh love, it’ll get better! Don’t compare yourself to someone else, we all have different bodies and different reactions to pain. I found the first 5 days pretty gruesome (and wondered why I’d agreed to have this done when I’d felt ok before the op) but honestly, it’s so worth it. I had my L THR just over 3 years ago and at 70 I’m still running and walking 30 miles a week and feel brilliant. It’ll be fine, just take the pain relief and wait to feel better.

Thank you! I will. We tend to be do impatient.
I’m still in the hospital. BP keeps dropping when they get me up so I’m almost passing out . Pt will try again later to get me up snd walking .

I managed to pass out completely whilst in the bathroom, just as my surgeon walked into the room to see how I was doing! See how you are tomorrow.

      Hi Debra,

I am very sorry to hear that you are experiencing so much pain. Jenny is right. Don’t compare. Everyone is different in regards to how they handle pain. It’s easy for me to say this because I am not in your shoes, but IT ….. WILL ….. GET …. BETTER! Your hip pain has been replaced by recovery pain. Once you’re recovered….you’ll (hopefully) be pain free. These feel like dark days right now, but stay optimistic. Look ahead to a few months from now, when the surgery site is finally on its way to healing and the pain your are feeling right now is long gone. Think about what running will be like in a year or so. Your initial stab at running may surprise you. It will feel different, especially while that hip is still healing. For me….I was at about 18 months before my runs started to feel “kinda” normal. Hang in there Debra. Keep us posted and get some rest!

Yes we’re all different and I’m sure (hopeful) that in a couple of months you’ll have forgot about these dark days and be wondering why you didn’t have it done sooner. Wishing you a speedy recovery in time for Thanksgiving.

      Hi Debra,

I felt awful for about 10 days after surgery.

I had mine done as an outpatient, and I had 8 prescriptions I had to fill before surgery. Four of them were painkillers, including oxycodone. If most people didn’t need them, there’s no way I would have had all those prescriptions.

Hang in there. I’m 6 weeks post surgery now, and I feel much, much better.

      Debra,
It will get better. Everybody’s pain threshold is different. My worst pain was day 6 post-surgery. I had to take any oxy and crashed for several hours.

The pain you’re experiencing now is surgery pain. Remember you just put your body thru major surgery. And the older we get, the longer it takes to recover (I’m 66). I’m 13 months post-surgery and do not regret it at all.

This website is a great place for information because we’ve all been there. Don’t hesitate to ask questions.

      Good luck.

      Ken

Thank you all for your input! I finally came home yesterday. Had a fever last night that was concerning but gone now. I am felling much better , walked around the house and just had a visit from the PT. I think I have turned the corner now and look forward to good days ahead.
      Happy Thanksgiving to all!
