Unsure of what I “should” be experiencing post-op

Hello team – my first post.  My total right hip replacement (anterior) was done on 2/4/20 at age 59.  Overall I truly believe the pre-op/operation/and post-op went really, really well.  My first follow-up with the surgeon and his PA was around 3/6/20 – xrays taken and all looked good.  I’m a yoga instructor – and with the advent of COVID-19 I’ve switched to online/Zoom sessions oftentimes with individuals signing on who are brand new or relatively new to yoga.  Therefore I’ve been compelled to demonstrate more of the poses/postures than I would normally.  My hip still has a lot of limited ROM and I’m modifying the yoga poses to manage this.  However I was curious to see if there are any others out here who have experienced a length of time before ROM returned – how long?  3 months; 6 months; 9 months; a year?  Many thanks.

I’m not sure there’s a ‘should’ as we are all different in the rate we heal. My THR (posterior approach) was over 3 years ago at the age of 65. I’m still noticing improvements in my ROM now and it’s been a gradual process. I’m still about 10% less flexible on the operated side and imagine that’s as good as it will get. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Good luck with your recovery and be patient with your body.

      Hey Runindy,
Your range of motion will improve over time for sure. I didn’t feel like I was back to running in a somewhat “normal” manner until around 18 months.

      Hope that helps.

Many thanks for the insight. I love my yoga practice as much as I love my running. I’m about 11 weeks post-op and haven’t started running yet. Lots of walking – and on trails going over logs; across creeks – I feel a bit unsteady. I’m on a stationary bike about 3-4 times/week for 30-35 minutes. I love to get my heart rate on the bike. Again thanks for the input. I’ll be curious to learn more about ROM – how much returns to my body; timing; etc.
