Triathlon 2.0 – Relaunch – 12 Month after THR

It has been exactly one year since my hip surgery. May 10th 2016 – THR, right – Stryker ceramic ball with a polyethylene cup.

Since then, I did almost everything to get back on track – but always under the restriction not to overload my new friend ‘CiPi’. To be precise, I went 3 times a week to the Gym, did a lot of Miles on the Bike as well as in the Pool. I decided to start running very late – during Christmas Holliday last year; to make sure, that all required muscles had been in a supportive and good shape. Since then I am running 2-3 times a week, now also doing some short intervals (400m – 1k).

And next Sunday – ‘CiCi’s’ first anniversary – I will participate in my first Triathlon (Sprint) since the surgery. Sure, running will be my weakness. But I would like to work as hard as it makes sense to get even faster. Right now, I am aiming for a 22:30 in the 5k after the Bike split.

I am still hoping, that a sub20 in 5k or sub40 in 10k might be possible again. But I am still struggling in regards to the right ‘workload’ for my hip. Maybe you have some good advices, which I will appreciate.

I am exactly 1 year post surgery today. I too, waited till Dec to start running.. ran my first 5k 4/4 and on Sunday did another and was a full 2 mins faster.. albeit I am slow but aiming to get back under 10 min miles. I am weight lifting 3x/week and running 4x – up to about 16 miles per week. Have lost a total of 22 pounds and feeling healthier every day. Every step I take I am still surprised there is no pain! Life is good! Good luck to you!!

What Grace said. I’m not quite at a year (8 months) but I started lifting 2-3x/week at 4 months; and waited until 6 months to start running. I’m now up to ~20 miles per week. Sometimes I’m sore — the hip feels stiffish and one of the flexor muscles is a bit achy — so I back off for a bit, either by skipping a gym day and/or a day of running. I would say let pain be your guide.

I’m already amazed at how smooth, pain free and speedier my running is. Hoping to get to the point where I can make a real plan for a trail 50K but that’s a ways off. For now, I’m enjoying every pain free small run I can manage. Cheers!

Carolyn; no plans here to tackle a 50k, LOL!! You go girl! BUT I did put a monthly massage in for “recovery” it really helps work the knots out in the quads. My massage therapist found a spot upper quad that basically was dormant with my bum hip and now that the alignment of my leg is “normal” that part of the muscle is actually working like its supposed to 🙂

Pain free runs are awesome, still surprised at almost every step, wait; NO PAIN???
