INJURY UPDATE

Two weeks ago, I reported that I injured my calf and I had to sideline myself.  This was terrible timing with my 1/2 marathon (the only one I’m running this year) coming up on December 1st.   The calf has been rehabbing quite well.  I have been icing it regularly.  I purchased these calf compression sleeves so that I could try to run a little without aggravating the injury further.    Additionally, I spoke with a teammate on the SDP who gave me a novel idea that he himself has been using to help rehab his calf.  It was something that was passed down to him by a colleague….and basically only recommended to those who have Bohemian tendencies.   jigsawwebIn a nutshell, it is a jigsaw with the blade removed that has been modified to use as a massaging tool for aching muscles.  Obviously, it is not a medical device, so I have to tell you to pursue/use this at your own risk.  Crude?  Maybe.  But let me tell you, I have been using it for my rehab and it has been working wonders on my sore muscles.  There are several ways to modify the jigsaw.rubberprotector  My friend used a rubber leg tip for his.  He just pulled the blade out and slipped the leg tip right over the the assembly where the blade usually slips in.   But my jig saw was different so I had to try a different option.   For minefeltgard I used the feltgard stem glides.  They work like a  charm.  Now every time I finish my run and often times before I hit the hay at night, I give my calf and sore muscles a once-over with this variable speed Bohemian bad boy.  The proof is in the pudding.  I have finally been able to log miles again.  On Saturday, I went out for 6.2 easy miles and followed it up with a 10 mile steady run on Sunday.   On Tuesday, I plan to meet up with the SDP boys again.  After a 3 week hiatus, I am looking forward to it. This is all very promising with my Half Maraton just 2 weeks away.

HIPRUNNER WELCOMES TWO NEW ‘HIP’ RUNNERS

Two new runners have joined our ranks and should be posting soon.

Terry  is from Milan, Michigan and had his hip surgery in March of 2013:

I really like the opportunity to share stories ans swap advice on the whole idea of a return to running after total replacement especially. I will be happy to post my tale-it is going very well.

Bobbie is from Boston, Mass and although she didn’t get a hip replacement she had 3 screws placed into her femural neck in October of 2013 (on her birthday no-less):

I came across your blog and love all the support out there and reading fellow runners experiences with hip surgery.

Be watching for their posts soon….
