TLHR First Anniversary

I am so happy!  It has been one year since my THR of my left hip and I feel great!  I started to slowly add some running back to my life after four months of healing.  I started by allowing myself one mile of run/walk per week for a month, and then adding one more mile per week per month.  I now allow myself 9 miles a week in any combination (usually 3 5ks) and tons of walking, hiking, biking, gym, etc.  I will continue to add some miles, and celebrated my 61st birthday last week with a 10k.  My orthopedic wasn’t very happy with me after my surgery  when I told him that running was going to continue to be a part of my life.  We came to an agreement that I would be slow to get back and that I wouldn’t be “stupid”!  He said I won’t wear the joint out, but that as a post menopausal, “small” woman, I do need to be aware that weakening bones can be a consideration for maintaining the integrity of the implant.  Point well taken.  I am careful, and I am addressing bone density BEFORE it becomes a problem with my primary care physician.  So all you hip “newbies” out there, take heart.  You will heal, you can run again, and most importantly  “Don’t be Stupid”!

From the research I’ve reviewed, running actually improves bones density as your using your body. It’s when we stop that things fall apart. I do 95% of my training slow, it allows me to recover quickly and run almost as much as I want. I do miss speed work, but I prefer not being injured. Listen to your body and should be fine.
