POST THR KNEE PROBLEM!!!!???

Hi ALL, I had a right THR July ’20. That issue went well and healed as planned BUT……about 6 wks post op when I could nearly have a good gait my right knee began aching all of the time. The site is in the area (or at) the insertion of the IT Band on the tibia. Clean xrays and mri done 2 wks prior to surgery appears clean also. Surgeon is stumped. Got cortisone shot a month ago with little comfort. On meloxicam now as Dr. “thinks” it may be arthritis…which if I had/have it, did not bother me prior to my accident. As of today, 11-4-2020 I have not ran since April and do not feel like I should until this is fixed. Anyone with this in common? Thanks.

      Hello RunnerRon,

I am currently 4 weeks post op and have been dealing with IT Band issues since before my surgery. Let me fill you in on my situation and you can decide if there are any parallels to yours.

I had to have my hip replaced due to avascular necrosis. As my hip became more and more unstable, my body altered my gait to enable me to walk. I ended up with such an incredibly tight piriformis and IT band that I was stretching them twice a day just to be able to walk around the house. Of course, when I came out of surgery, I still had an injured IT band and piriformis to deal with. My physical therapist has given me new stretches to work on this (I can’t do the do the old stretches due to my movement restrictions), and I do them 3X/day. It’s still a work in progress, but it has helped a lot.

Also, my knee is still sore and bruised. My PT thinks that they had a clamp on my knee and that is where the bruising came from. And of course, being on blood thinners doesn’t help the healing process.

I’m not a medical professional, so take what you like and leave the rest.

      Hi RunnerRon,
I am not a doctor either but I really think Hoppie is on to something. You definitely need to listen to your doc, but if it is possible to consider some PT, I would go for it! Wish you the best of luck! Stay stay stay optimistic!
