post op abduction

Day 5 post-op: Working with PT at home still, seeing improvements in all exercises except abduction while supine. Not painful to do the motion, just like there is no response at all. If anyone had this unresponsive/weak muscle sensation, how long does it last? Is there sudden improvement or is it a rebuild of that motion? thanks

You’re only 5 days post op!!!!! You’re doing extremely well. Don’t forget those muscles have been pulled and pushed around quite a bit, patience is the name of this game so just carry on with the exercises and give them a chance to heal. My abducters were ok but my glutes were dreadful & I’m still working on them now 2 years later. Good luck with the recovery.

3.5 weeks post op here. Abduction was frustrating to me at first as well. I felt like week two was really milestone week in that I really started to feel that strength coming back. Each day brings you new strength and flexibility! Best wishes !

I agree with the comment above. After 5 days there was still numbness (especially on the aductor) but it’s a long process back to ‘normal’. I too have had a lot of problems with my glute med – even now 4 years later – but it’s manageable.

I like your optimism! 5 days in and you’re asking questions. Stay patient and remain optimistic! Report back in a few weeks and let us know if this is still a problem.’

It also depends on the type of surgery. I had a lateral (side) approach and my abductor muscles were “dead” 5 weeks after surgery but eventually came back. Now almost 5 months after surgery, the muscles still don’t fire off as well as my good leg but continue to improve and should be normal in the next month or two. I still do abductor exercises and stretches 3 days a week.

By the way, based on my experience, you will reach a large number of early milestones (walking with cane, without cane, etc.) very quickly but then the milestones start moving farther and farther apart. You just need to be patient and assume it will be 6 months to 1 year before you completely feel normal.

      Good luck!

Thanks so much for the insights. I have noted improvement with muscle response today. I am beginning to believe in the end of this adventure, beyond physical improvement, I will have become a more patient person. Previously with limitations I found a work around. I will not work around this I will work through this at the pace that my body sets.
