Wow- this is an amazing site, I’m so glad that I found it! While certainly not as accomplished as most of you, I have been running for 40yrs and genetics finally caught up with me. I had osteoarthritis in my left hip, which finally prevented me from running. Several doctors and friends told me that I couldn’t run after a THR and I was pretty down and out, until I found this site!

I had an anterior approach THR of my left hip on Jan 15 with a titanium alloy stem, ceramic ball, and titanium cup with plastic lining. I’m only a little over a week post-op, but so far this surgery is amazing. I had mine done at a surgery center and walked out to my car (with crutches and the help of my wife) five hours later-that’s incredible. Physical therapy came to my house several times over the next week, and now they are done. I am walking around the house with a cane and plan to go back to work tomorrow. The whole process has been truly amazing to me. After I recuperate from this, I have to get a torn rotator cuff repaired, and I am way more nervous about that operation!

I love reading everyone’s posts on this site, and draw energy and hope from them. I don’t know if I am as gutsy as you guys and will go back to full-time running, but just the thought that I may be able to go out and run on that crisp fall day, or down that secluded stretch of beach, is enough to keep me going. I also ski, hike, bike, kayak, and xc ski to keep me busy and I am looking forward to going back to those activities.

Thanks to all of you for giving me hope and guidance through a difficult decision process for me, and good luck to those of you that are on the edge of moving forward and getting the operation!

      Hey there!

I am happy to hear that your surgery went well! I believe that doctors telll you that is isn’t advised or recommended as a “cya” thing. I had my pre-op appointment today and was told the same thing in a manner that suggests it was a “cya” statement. He said that the risk is wearing out the plastic portion and needing that replaced. He said maybe in 10 or 20 years if at all. Doctor said don’t go back to running right away, maybe in 8 weeks or less. No crazy yoga poses right away either. He said eventually I will be able to do whatever I want to do.

Running is so central to my life. I run 6 days a week. I will not give it up. Never stop running!

I do strength training 4-5 times per week and also do other activities as well-hike, ski, kayak, walk, snowshoe. I am not as passionate about those as I am running and strength training.

If you love running as much as I do and want to get back to it on a regular basis- I say, do it!

I’m already signed up for two Ragnars-a trail in August and one in September I’ll keep everyone posted on my progress as I hope you will!

      Best of luck,

      David

Hi guys, for those of you who have had a THR, was your surgery robot assisted or not? I am close to deciding that it is time for me to have a THR and I am trying to decide whether to spend the extra $$$ for robot assisted or not. Thanks, Greg

Just FYI you should make this a new post to get more views. You replied to an older thread I was following. I had my THR on 2/11, no robot and I’m walking 3 miles a day and doing weights 5x/week. I’m not familiar with tbe advantages of the robot but in my experience so far it isn’t necessary.
