It’s time to get my other hip replaced!

Hello everyone,

I got a total hip replacement on my right hip back in May of 2018.  Like I’ve said in earlier posts, it took me over a year to start feeling like running was ok after surgery.  I’ve had a great year running so far this year.  Lots of adventuring in the mountains of Alaska.  Ran some 5Ks under 18 minutes and even qualified for Boston again in August with a 2:59 marathon.  However, my other hip is very arthritic and it’s to the point where it’s affecting my sleep and getting around isn’t much fun anymore.  My Doctor told me it was just a matter of time before I had to do my other hip.

I’m just curious how many of you on this forum got both hips replaced and how is the running with 2 hip replacements?  I definitely would love to get another year of running before surgery, but I just don’t think it’s possible.

Any advice would be great!

Hope all is well Hip Runners!

Hi, I’m a double hippie, 1st one feb 19, 2nd one feb 20, I’m back running and have been for the last 6 months. Taking it easy for another 4 months, running 8.30/mile rather than 6.30/mile like I used to be able to manage over 5Ks. Looking at your running times you wont have much trouble fitness wise, just listen to your body and take it easy for the 1st 12 months, no point taking risks with your new hip too early. Good luck

Wow Equinox! 2:59 is awesome! Sounds like you are in shape which is great for recovering from the second replacement. I don’t have 2 hips but I do have a hip and a partial knee. Still running. Just returning from injury but I was out for a five miler today. Stay positive and optimistic and you’ll be back to running fast times.

My hips were done 30 months apart. L is a metal/metal Birmingham resurfacing, R is a ceramic/ceramic Zimmer THR. Was up to speed after a year or so on the first but knew I only had 2 years left on the other. Since having 2 fake hips I have got back to about 95%, with a couple of periods where the recent leg was painful – possible a stretched/trapped nerve – brought on by doing too much. The last month I have been attempting to meet county standards (65-69 Silver) at 1, 5, 6 and 10 miles and 5k so currently there are pains everywhere! Next target is to start on 70-74 Gold standards, from next week…
Have managed several long days in the hills this year, in between lockdowns, including a couple of 20 miles and one of 42 miles – no problems from legs on these, just everything else!
My advice is to get yours done asap and get training again likewise.
