How to maintain my native hip

Hello Hip Runners,

I joined because I’m interested in what you all did for your hip before THR.  I’m a multi sport athlete and enjoy running and cycling on all different surfaces.  This summer my hip started hurting , probably b/c I was doing too much of everything during lockdown. My ortho says the hip is arthritic and will eventually need THR.  So, I want to keep running and delay THR as long as possible. I’ve been able to run 1 or maybe  2 marathons per year and would love to run another 1 (or 10).

I’d like to hear what people did to limit pain and keep hip function. Yoga? Meds? Shoes ? Etc.

      Hi, and welcome!
I was at the end of my distance-running career when parkrun came to our area so focusing on a 5k ‘race’ once a week was one way to limit the damage to my arthritic hips, I also took the advice of my physio and bought a bike to keep fit without impact. I followed the 5:2 fasting diet for a few months to shed 10 pounds of unnecessary fat, and hence load on my joints, and filled up with ibuprofen when the pain got too bad. That all gave me about 3 years extra and was certainly enjoyable (most of the time…). Still used flat racing shoes for 5k, hardly went longer than 5 miles in occasional training in softer shoes.
Had a metal resurfacing in 2014 and a ceramic THR in 2017, now getting back to 30 miles a week and currently running every day as an experiment, which seems to be working. Might be up gor a half-marathon next year… Good Luck!

When I first learned that my hip was arthritic, I moved to Mountain Biking. It didn’t work for me. Running is so good because you can throw on your gear and head out the door. With Mountain biking, I was losing fitness and gaining weight. So I went back to running and surprisingly, I was able to continue for another 14 years before it was time for the THR. I wouldn’t have changed a thing. Running is and always has been an important quality of my life. I knew I wanted to run again after my THR. 8 years later, I am still running.
