How long did pain take to go away?

Hello all. Had my THR with a leg length increase on April 13th. The stretching of the muscles and ligaments added a bit of recovery work. How long should I expect to have pain in my hip before I am finally pain free. That was the primary driving force for getting this done in the first place.

I had the same with a posterior approach on 3/24. I think I was finally really pain free a few days ago. I think 8 week mark for me.

I had anterior approach THR down in October. Arthritis pain was gone when I awoke from surgery. Surgical pain was gone almost completely in two months. I still have some soft tissue irritation but I’m also doing a ton of training. Last check up, doctor reassured me hip is totally healed. The soft tissue and nerves take time.

right hip 01/09 and left hip 02/13.
i still have substantial pain in the left – following up with my surgeon in 2 days for the ‘umpteenth’ time…
      frustrated is putting it mildly!
i’m 37, I am a mom of two small children and have had to stop working full time (now part time) as the pain is too much.

I also had THR in October last year. It’s taken until now I think to be completely pain free and able to run shortish distances.

I am with Jenny. Doc told me I couldn’t run for 3 months. But it still felt a bit painful (and awkward) when I started. Give it time, everyone is a little different. Stay optimistic. You’ll see improvement each day.

Wow Jenna. I am really (REALLY) surprised that you are still experiencing pain in your right hip after 4 years. That just doesn’t seem right. Have you looked into a different surgeon?

      Tom.

My surgery was last August. Arthritis pain gone immediately. Surgical pain was gone in about a month, it was mostly muscle soreness from the anterior procedure. Did lots of walking and 6 weeks PT to undo goofy walking habits, very easy yoga, more walking on easy ground. Rough ground, backpack Andy more elevation change at 8 weeks. Did not resume running until 6 months. Am up to 20 miles per week, all on trail. Still feel sore on occasion but I just back off a little. Pretty much healed but doc says really, it’s 18 months for complete healing for an active person. I’m 50 and was in decent shape before surgery. Everyone heals differently, I pay a lot of attention and adjust accordingly. It’s a major surgery and healing takes time. Patience and good luck!

Thanks for all the replies. I was getting a bit discouraged but I had a really good week. Physio pushed me a bit with squats yesterday and I am in a bit of pain today, but having gone for 8 days with relatively little pain, I am optimistic now that I will eventually get to a nearly pain free life. I lived with moderate to severe pain even with narcotics for 17 years so I feared that I would still be like that. My eight day stretch without pain was like being in heaven. I am biking 20 k a day. Walking 6 k. Don’t want to push my luck and ruin a good thing.

Jenny, I will say a little prayer for you whenever I still have pain. And I pray you find a solution. Anyone who has lived with pain daily knows how horrible that can be. I pray you find the relief that I finally found.
