Here comes the new hip

ok, here I go, new left hip going in tomorrow 08/02/2018. I have read several posts and I am actually looking forward to getting back to a normal workout schedule as my body allows. My wife is training for Houston 1/2 and it is a bummer watching her leave and I am not running with her. Will be back soon!

      Grumpy,
Best wishes from a fellow Houstonian. Had my first THR on 1/16/2018, at a location near Loop 610 and US 59. Take your meds as prescribed and IMMEDIATELY start taking some form of stool softener. I can’t stress that enough.
      Keep us posted.

I am out! Completed THR at 12:30. All seems well super happy! Just walked down hall, amazing.
      Thanks Tom

Pauliver, same facility I am at. Great place so far. My doctor is Dr Parsley. Thanks for info and I will listen to all suggestions
      Thanks.

It sounds like everything went well. Isn’t modern medicine wonderful? Don’t forget that old hip pain. The pain of the recovering surgery site may get you down a bit as the days progress. It doesn’t compare to the old hip pain and eventually it will go away. I had surgery in January of 2012 and went on my first run in April 2012. It felt very funny and weird. By July I was racing 5ks. I didn’t feel that I was fully back until around 16 months. Set your timeline, do core work and enjoy the achievement of little goals to keep your optimism high. 🙂

Thanks Tom! Yes the surgery went great, heading home now. WOW! I am working up my future running plans now but I plan on going slow and steady so to be 100% for the long haul. I enjoy reading the posts I felt very informed and comfortable going into this procedure. Glad I found this site.

Did Dr. Parsley tell you not to run anymore?

Pauliver, he did not. I asked him if I could walk Chevron Houston in January and he said yes. When I asked him about my future running he stated that these new hips can last 20+ years now but, he did tell me that running would probably have me visiting him before then. My plans are to train to run at 6mths and do low impact till then

Here is a follow up. I am on my 5th day post left hip replacement. I have been walking every day. When the phone rings from family and friends I go to driveway and walk. The pain is worst in the mornings when I wake up but, after up and moving the pain is tolerable. I only take a pain med in the morning. Probably should take more often but they scare me. Still happy I have done this and continue the look to a better future.

I would have taken more of the heavy meds during the first 3 or 4 weeks post-surgery, especially at bedtime. If you can get a decent night’s sleep, it will work wonders for your recovery and mental state. Even breaking a pill in two and taking half when you go to bed and the other half if you waken could help you get rest. And keep drinking water, large volumes.

Be careful about movements that could dislocate your new hip. I am sure the hospital gave you literature on the do’s and don’ts of movements while your new device gets “incorporated” into your system. It is good advice.

By the time Houston starts having decent weather (October?), you should be well down the recovery path.

      Best wishes for you!

Here is a question. I am 2 weeks today and although the pain in my hip is gone, I do have pain at night, more of a deep leg pain as in bone pain or Muscles probably. I have been walking every day but with a cane. Sleep is restless due to throbbing. Is this normal at this stage and when will this go away?
