Hi Hip Runners,

I’m 56 and had a right anterior THR 1 month ago (July 24, 2019). I’m walking mostly without a limp (I’m a little stiff in the morning), climbing stairs, stationary bike with no resistance (per dr though I feel like I could add a little resistance and it would be fine), lots of stretching and strength exercises, and PT isĀ  going great. I’m thrilled with how everything is going and I feel stronger every day. My dr frowns on running again. My PT is more optimistic though cautious right now. When did you start slow running after hip replacement? I’m not in a huge rush, but I’m curious as to the timeline – knowing it all will depend on how my body is doing.

I’m a triathlete with one full Ironman and many half Ironman races completed. I want to get back into racing but I’m not sure if I should set a goal for summer 2020 or not. Not necessary to do another full IM but I’d like to at least do an Olympic or perhaps a half. I’m very goal oriented and I’m finding I need something to look forward to. Is it reasonable to expect to be able to race on this new hip? My plan right now is to regain strength and flexibility for a few months and perhaps start training again in Jan or Feb 2020. I just need a little advice from those of you who’ve done this thing!

Many thanks!

Sandy

      Hi Sandy!
Welcome to the hip runners! You have the right mindset for sure! Setting goals, having patience and staying optimistic will be key to your return to running. I started back slowly after 3 months. It wasn’t until around month # 18 that running felt semi normal again. The key will be to listen to your hip. When it tells you it is time to rest….then rest. After a few days try it again. Before you know it you will be back at it! Looking forward to
      Seeing your progress!

      Hi Sandy

I had my right THR on 25th July 19 and I have been busting at the seams to get back at it . I’m 52 and did a park run sarurday past which was
4weeks and 2 days after op. I must admit i was very timid and it was more of a fast walk with occasional jog . I felt like I was carrying a metal ball in my ass cheek but managed it ok and wasnt sore. I plan to go again this Saturday.

Hey Sandy 2020 is a GREAT goal! I set a Goal of running a half marathon within 6 months and I achieved it. My surgeon trained in LaJolla, so I set the La Jolla half as my goal. And I ran the Kalamazoo Half the following weekend. Both within six months. Assuming the running portion id the tough portion.. your goal is attainable. Best of luck!

Hi Sandy, I’d be cautious about setting a goal so soon, I would recommend giving it 3 months and then see where your at and then set a goal. From my experience setting goals and planning too many races forces you to do more than you should at times and can lead to injury. I’m not saying don’t set stretch goals, believe me I push myself every year, but we’re all different and it’s important to plan accordingly. Good luck.
