Played 5-a-side football weekly during the 80s, increasing to 3 times a week by mid 2000s. At this time had a bad tear in my right thigh, which I stupidly tried to play through and the motion in my right hip was never quite right from that point on. Had physio to correct this in 2009 and all seemed OK for a period, also hip X-ray OK. Started running to increase my fitness playing 5-a-side. Normally running about 4k 3 times a week, Ended up entering a couple of 10ks in 2010 which went fine. Had a recurrence of the lack of movement and back to physio on 2013. X-ray this time was bad and was advised to have THR and no more football/running. Did not fancy that so decided to manage it through physio and carry on playing/running. Did a half marathon in 2015 which was a struggle but just under 2.5 hours. After the half marathon I found I was limping badly after football and jogging. Did one more 10k in 2016 and then found I could not get into any rhythm running. Had to reduce to playing 5-a-side every 2 weeks and limping even worse. In 2018 stopped all football/running on orders of new physio. Tried shoe inserts to balance me up as right leg now 1/2 inch shorter. During Pandemic did virtually no walking and found I could not walk 1/4 mile without getting exhausted. Finally realised I needed to get my hip replaced so started the process. Covid got in the way so did not get this done until April 2021. Surgeon was not sure if I'd walk normally afterwards as I had such a strange gait. One year on I can walk perfectly normally and have done some tentative runs which are faster than my times 5 years ago. Still not gone back to football but tempted
