In 2004, I was diagnosed with leukemia and in 2005 I had a bone marrow transplant. The transplant failed and I had another one in 2007. I had always been into being healthy and exercised and walked but after the whole cancer thing I really got into it. I went to a cancer rehab center and they got me into running and I have been running ever since. After a bone marrow transplant, there are many complications that can occur and some of it is due to having a compromised immune system. I have had meningitis, pneumonia several times and some other diseases and each time I had to start from scratch with the whole couch to 5k program. I would run 5k's regularly and I did one once the day after I got out of the hospital for pneumonia. Pretty sure my time was over 50 minutes! I finally got to a place where I was staying pretty healthy for a while and began to run at a decent pace (for me). I was really getting pumped about this and then my hip started hurting. Drs. thought it was my back or something else but it turned out that I have a stress fracture in my femur and bad osteoarthritis in my hip- the hip dr. said it is basically bone on bone and I need THR. I was so discouraged because iI was finally improving and doing well. I am very slow but I love to run. So I ignored the dr and kept running. Now it is 2 years later and I don't think I can put it off anymore. The dr. said I wouldn't be able to run afterwards, but this website gives me hope. Running is important to me because when I run, i feel healthy and not like a cancer person.
