I have been exercising since im a teenager, and had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in my left knee 15 years ago. I started running around 8 years ago doing at least one half marathon a year. 6 years ago i started cycling. Around 2 years ago i felt some inflammation in my hip when i ran and the dr prescribed anti inflam and said it was bursitis. I dismissed any aching or pain as overdoing it and inflammation as a result. Last year in October, I started increasing my runs to train for Miami half at the end of January. Thanksgiving, I ran 13.1 miles in the park at a decent pace and that Sunday I ran 8 miles at a pushed pace. Tuesday and Wednesday, I did back to back zumba classes. After that I started limping and feeling pain in my right hip. Once it started waking me up at night, I knew sonething was wrong. I started physical therapy and went to an orthopedist. He told me that i have hip dysplasia... born with it, as i am a first born female and arthritis. I took anti inflam... continued pt...did cortisone shots in my hip joint, bursa, and lubricating monovisc in my hip joint. He told me I would eventually need hip replacement. I thought ok when I'm 70. I took an mri that showed that I have a labrum tear as a result of arthritis. I ran Miami half at a slower pace and lived with the pain. Went to a labrum repair top surgeon and he said I’m not a candidate... and that I need hip replacement. I didn’t believe him or the other specialists that I went to. Finally, the physiatrist (sports medicine, pain management dr) in Hospital for Special Surgery told me... You did all the shots, you are doing physical therapy... you are bone on bone...It’s not a question of if ...you need surgery... it’s when. I could not live like this so I scheduled surgery for August 16, 2017 after I did my yearly 72 mile 5500 feet elevation, charity ride in July. Cycling took away my day pain and I did not feel it on the bike... just my endurance and stamina was compromised since I stopped all exercise and running. Today was the 3 month mark that the dr said I could start running again. I ran 1 mile in Prospect Park, Brooklyn,
