First Marathon-Run/Walk Method

What’s the popular opinion of the run/walk method to completing your first marathon?  Total right hip replaced on 1-4-17 and back to running again.  My 5th half coming up in 1 week and a half.  After that, I’m contemplating my first full.  Will turn 60 in August and ready for a new challenge.  Seems like a good option but would like to hear what others think or if you have tried this method.

Congratulations on your continued running success since your THR. I personally think the run/walk method is a valid tool for any distance and particularly for aging runners. I’m 65 now and I’ve been using it for several years, not only for races but during my normal runs as well. I’m also working at getting back to regular running since my THR in January of 2018. I’ve compared my perceived running effort and times using run/walk vs running only. Effort is less and times are faster using run/walk. Mind you, in racing I’ve used it for mainly half marathons at just over 2 hrs and have not done a full marathon. It may not work nearly as well if you’re much faster. My own method has been to use my running app set to give feedback every half mile. At each half mile I will walk 30-60 seconds depending on how I feel and may sometimes skip the walk if I’m feeling good. Give it a try and see what you think. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Thanks, Mark. Good advice. Seems like once you nail the running pace and amount of time spent running, the amount of time walking will be simple. I’ve completed a 6 miler in the wind doing the run/walk and couldn’t believe my overall time and pace-it was very encouraging. Can’t wait to train aggressively for a half or a full. Will help with the knees.
