Disappointing setback

I had my six-week post-op appointment with my surgeon today. He, in concurrence with my physical therapist, is not comfortable with my recovery and said another several weeks before I can begin returning to a fitness regime. Six weeks before he wants me to go back to my part-time job as a lifeguard. Based on a couple of setbacks I’ve had up to now, my current range of motion, and my muscular strengt…they just feel that the muscles and soft tissue aren’t ready for that yet. It’s so disappointing becasue mentally I was all ready to get back out there.

Hi Dan! I know it is frustrating but try not to get too discouraged — The soft tissue is really the hardest part to heal and it is totally different for everyone. While they may have had a previous goal of returning to physical activity in 6 weeks, it could simply be you had too much bruising/damage that is just taking a while to heal, limiting your range of motion and strength. Don’t give up — It will progress, just follow the PT instructions and don’t push it — The soft tissues will heal!!! Keep us posted.

Optimism is the key Dan. It is still very early for the hip. For runners, 6 weeks seems like an eternity, but you really do need to heed the advice of your doc and PT. Don’t worry though….you will be back…. in time!

Recovery is back to normal per se. I went to a pool PT session yesterday and actually did some water running, and they let me swim a few laps. The therapist cleared me to go to the pool on my own for some more of what we did, and regular lap swimming (but still restricted from doing flip turns for fear of dislocating the hip). So things are better.
