I am a 64 year old male currently living in Kakegawa, Japan. I’ve been running for fun for 40 years. Used to run marathons but have not completed any since 1991. In 2011 while living in Santa Fe, NM (typically running 40 mile per week), I started to have what I thought were chronic muscle problems in my right interior and posterior thigh every time I ran. In 2012 I moved to Taiwan and when this issue became so annoying I finally went to an ortho there who pretty instantly diagnosed osteoarthritis deterioration of the hip. I was able to keep going for another 6 months on Mobic, but finally that no longer worked so So I had a THR January 2013 in Taiwan. Recovery was managed conservatively but at 8 weeks I was freed with no restrictions. I substituted a bike for running, and even though my ortho said running was OK, I’ve been really hesitant. I started up again using the barefoot technique, don’t run any more than 2 miles at a time, and usually only twice a week.
