Got cleared to start slowly training, along with continued PT. Went for my first bike ride since August of last year, when I had my botched replacement. I did 15 miles of mostly flat, easy paced bliss! Dang it felt good. Not race pace by any means, but it will slowly get there. A little sun, a little rain and cool temps……nice… (Click Here to View Full Post and Comments)

Anthony S – All cleared!!
I had my six week checkup yesterday. X-rays taken. The orthopedist said that everything looked great, I was moving and walking well, and that he liked my range of motion. No need to see him for one year, unless problems pop up. I asked him about running. He told me two things. One, to wait a full three months from time of replacement to start running again, and two, that there was no limit to the type of running that I could do, but that there is a “finite” amount of miles in the replacement hip, so choose your running miles carefully 😉 Overall, a great checkup. … (Click Here to View Full Post and Comments)
Anthony S – Gym Time
One of my friends and training partners called and asked if I was ready for a swim workout. I am now four weeks out, so I said “sure.” I went to the gym early to loosen up on the recumbent bike for 20 minutes. We swam for one half hour, then went for coffee. Hip felt great. Four hours later, it’s talking to me a bit, but not bad. I will talk to the PT folks tomorrow to get their input on how much I can push this. Happy Fathers Day.… (Click Here to View Full Post and Comments)
Anthony S – PT getting better
Beginning of third week of PT. Raising the resistance on the bike and the weights on the leg extensions. They said that I can really begin training after my six week visit with my doc. Then the movements that have been kept from me can be unveiled!! Hard not to over do it right now…… (Click Here to View Full Post and Comments)
Anthony S – Second week of PT
Started my second week of PT this morning. After the usual stretching, mini massage and the like, we actually started on the recumbent bike. I was very stiff for the first few rotations, then everything started to loosen up. After five minutes, we moved on to the leg press. Very little weight, but it felt really good to do real exercises again. After the whole session, I left in a very, very good mood. On my way to being whole again…… (Click Here to View Full Post and Comments)
Anthony S – 1st day at PT
Yesterday was my first real physical therapy session. I am now 3 1/2 weeks out from replacement. It was pretty much a range of motion exercise. Already though, they said that my range of motion is better now than it was six months after my last messed up replacement! Starting slow with the exercises. I can’t wait to start into a real training program again. Patience, patience…….… (Click Here to View Full Post and Comments)
About me, Anthony Smith
First of all, thanks for a site like this. I am a 58 year old male, married, three children and two grand kids. I am also a left below knee amputee, and the recipient of two total hip replacements on my right hip. and I compete in triathlons…The first replacement was done in August of 2013. Yep, not that long ago. It was done so poorly, that it would dislocate at the slightest squat, bending over to pick something up, etc. man did that hurt! After putting up with that, I went to the most awesome orthopedist in Washington State. Two xrays and he knew that the cup part of the joint was implanted incorrectly.. The orientation was such that the ball part would just pop out of the cup. I am three weeks into the new hip. Ceramic ball and PE cup liner. It already feels 100% better. I start real PT on Thursday.… (Click Here to View Full Post and Comments)
