Birmingham hip failure

Had a Birmingham hip resurfacing done in Jan 2018.  Two weeks later the femoral head broke off.  Now I have a total replacement.  Broken pieces were sent for pathology.  Do not have the results yet.  Plan on running with this one and not holding back.  If it only lasts 10 years or so then I just get a revision.

My sympathies Johan – I was lucky enough that my femoral head broke off during the BHR operation so the revision to THR did not require another surgery. On the basis that there was nothing breakable any more I was back jogging 5k at 5 and a bit weeks (although I do still have some pain from this leg at 9 months, mainly from running). Don’t hold back, it will last longer than 10 years I reckon, but don’t push too hard too soon – let the soft tissues heal properly first.

      Cheers, Pete
Oh, and my BHR on the other leg is fine, confirmed by blood test recently, at 3 years old.

      Hi Pete,

I plan on taking it easy for a few months. Won’t run for at least 10 weeks. I’m 56 now and if the THR lasts 25 years then I’m thinking I’m not going to hold back. I’ll just get a revision in my late 60’s early 70’s then. Still want to do a few marathons.

      Cheers
      Johan

      Johan,
So sorry to hear about the failure of the hip resurfacing. The THR is going to treat you well my friend!

Thanks for the encouragement Tom. I went for the BHR because it had no restrictions on the amount of running you do (if you don’t get metallosis). I’ve now decided I’m going to wear this THR out by not holding back on running. I’ll just get a revision in about 10 years or so which will be the time I calm down on the running and it will then last the rest of my life. Going to see doctor on Friday for two week check-in. Hopefully they will know why the BHR failed. Also need to find out what a revision entails. Happy running!

      Johan,
I like your spunk.. and good luck with your new THR , at least you don’t have to worry about fracturing the femoral head anymore. I truly hope that we meet someday, both of us running a marathon

      It’s a date – let’s plan. Maybe in a year’s time?

Pathology results showed healthy strong bones. I told doc that unless he comes up with different evidence, I’m telling people he must have caused a hairline fracture when he banged it on.
