Congrats CMC! That is GREAT NEWS!!!! You are one of a small but growing list of Hiprunners who opted for resurfacing over Total Hip Replacement. please keep us posted on your progress because I am sure there are many who are wondering which route is the best way to go. THR? Or Resurfacing? Your feedback will be VERY helpful for them.

      Dear CMC,
My left hip needs replacing and I’m struggling with resurfacing v. THR. I’ve seen Dr. Su’s website and am considering him. How did you make your decision? And how does Dr. Su recommend running when all the other docs are so opposed to it? Is that data showing that Resurfacing takes the pounding better than THR?

      Many thanks,
      John

Dr. Su was recommended to me by a fellow runner/triathlete. I was already scheduled for hip replacement surgery when my friend heard about it and contacted me. My friend said do not get hip replacement surgery because you will never run again. I had not heard of hip resurfacing before. So I Googled the name of Dr. Su and read about him. I telephoned Dr. Su’s office and scheduled an appointment. I flew to New York City and meet with Dr. Su. I was very impressed with Dr. Su. He assured me that hip resurfacing was a safe procedure and that I could run as much as I wanted after hip resurfacing surgery. I was persuaded. Dr. Su said he has done about 4,500 hip procedures, both hip resurfacing and hip replacement. Dr. Su said I was a candidate for resurfacing because my femur bone was in good condition. I am 67 years old. Dr. Su performed hip resurfacing surgery on my right hip on January 20, 2017. It’s now been 14 weeks since the surgery, a little over 3 months, and I am extremely pleased with my progress. Yesterday I walked 6 miles on a treadmill. The past week I’ve walked 28 miles. No discomfort. My gait is getting stronger. I’ve also biked 40 miles last month and swam about 2 miles. I feel strong enough to run now and occasionally will jog on the street or treadmill to test my hip. But I quickly remind myself that I’m in this for the long haul and want to wait 6 months after surgery before I start running again. I am quite confident that I will one day run a marathon again and even another Ironman Triathlon.
