Congrats to your operation, when i start running 2008 i used minimalistic shoes, but when my hips went bad i go over to Hoka shoes its very cushoned shoe with 5 mm drop. After my both hips are replaced 2016 and 2017 i only use Hoka shoes. In 2018 i run 13 marathons only in Hoka shoes, my goal is 20 marathon in 2019,next week i do my third this year. You have to see whats best for you test different shoes, best luck to you and keep on running.

Thanks for your post I am 56 and having a THR on my left hip in April 2019 and your post just encouraged me enormously my partner Marie is slowly coming around Elton the idea I will be running again before the end of the year she just worries I will fall or push myself racing too soon. To be fair if I can do Parkrun and 5k or 10k runs I will feel totally blessed as I thought I would never run again at one point. Please keep us all posted on your progress I cannot say how much it means to hear progress stories
Cheers Ian ( a Clayton Harrier)

      Hi Ian,

Everybody has their preferences. For instance, Hip Brother Dave Whiteside worked hard to increase his cadence and shorten his stride. This allowed him to use minimalist shoes. He just completed a 100 miler recently. You might check in with him for advice if you want to go for minimalist shoes. As for me. I carry a 190 lb frame and prefer the Hoka’s for running on the road. The Hoka Clifton especially offers serious cushioning while being considerably light weight. As far as trails go, I stick to the Brooks Adrenaline as the profile is lower and I am less likely to catch my foot on a root or a rock. Best of luck to you and starting up again. I started back up after 3 months and haven’t looked back.

      Hi Ian,
As Tom said, everyone is different. I’ve tried the higher profile shoes but they didn’t work for me. Me feet rolled in them and I would get hot spots on the bottom of my feet, neither of these occur with regular shoes. Once a week I try to run barefoot, but I live near the beach so it’s a little easier for me. However if you can find a nice grass area, doing some speed/mobility drills in bare feet can help your form and increase your cadence. I prefer the 4 mm drop with not a high cushion. I prefer to feel the road more so if something doesn’t feel right I get more immediate feedback. I typically race in On Running shoes, but did the HipRunner Marathon in Adidas. I also train a lot in Newton’s which help rain for more a a mid/fore step rather then heel strike. I typically run about 50 miles a week and will use 4 or so different shoes so I don’t become dependent on any one. For races I like 7 to 8 ounce shoes, and no more than 10 ounce for training. I would stick with what you were used to and if it’s not working look for alternatives. A higher cadence and good running form is more important than a particular brand for me. Also make sure you do some stretching and strengthening during the week, that will build your muscles which will help your running form. Hope this helps.
      Dave.

Thanks for your feedback, seems like it’s a little trial and error.
