5 Months Post Operation

I am 39 years old and had a LTHR five months ago. I had the anterior approach. My recovery has been great. I do the elliptical, spin, strength train, hip/glute specific exercises daily. My thigh is still numb, but I understand it could be that way for a while.

I have tried running twice. The first time was great. I ran a minute and walked a minute. I did this 4 times. This included a 15 minute warmup and 15 minute cool down. The next time I ran was a week later, after the third interval I had a deep pain in the bottom of my glute. I stopped. It hurt the rest of the day. The next day it was fine. Shew! It was such a deep pain that it has scared me to run again. 😩 But I dearly would love to try again. I have ran 15 marathons and 3 ultras and dearly miss it. I don’t want to run those kind of miles in the future.  I Only want to be able to be able to run a couple miles a few times a month. I miss running on vacation too! This is my hope!

Questions:

1. Anyone experience this pain?
2. Anyone scared to run on new hip?

3. Recommended shoes? Hokas?

      Hi,
      8 months postop, 70 years old and have been running since high school. Cycling and hip exercises going well so bought a new pair of Hoka Arahis and decided it was time to run again. Disastrous results! Muscles I didn’t even know I had started hurting only after about 50 yards. Mainly in the groin area. So, do more hip strengthening and try it again next week. As Dr Sheehan used to say, we are all an experiment of one. Good luck with your struggle!

      Hi lalveyevv.

      Congrats on your surgery and great recovery. I will defer to Hipbrother Tom’s wise advice – be patient and listen to your body. Five months is still pretty early in the overall healing process.

      I’m 66 years old now. I had mine over two years ago and still notice new improvement. I too had an anterior approach and had considerable numbness throughout my thigh. After two years most numbness is gone but some will probably never go away. I started back running after 9 months. My body was probably not ready at that time though. I had lingering pain around the hip capsule during running. While it didn’t get worse it was worrisome. What has helped me are the hip and glute strengthing exercises. After two years my new hip feels like “my own”. Strength, rang of motion and flexibility are as as good as my other hip and better than I ever expected. Running on the new hip is great, it’s the rest of my body that gives me problems now.

      I’m a huge Hoka fan. The Clifton has been my favorite. The cushion and slight rocker fit my needs beautifully.

      Don’t let the worry get you down. Keep doing what you can do and be patient with your hip. It will come together in time.

      Hey there!
      I would hazard to guess that the pain you were feeling was your body’s way of telling you that it is adjusting to the new hip. To protect the hip, other muscles are picking up the slack. Glad you felt better after a couple of days. You need to listen to the body and the hip. When your body tells you to take a break, be sure to take a break. After a little rest, try again. Over time, you’ll need less and less rest. It’s a process, but you will be back to running.

      As Tom said, take your time and listen to your body, strengthen your hips. I started off running 5K’s and 10K’s and now run ultra’s about every 5 weeks. If you want it, you can get it, just run slow, and then slow down some more until you find your legs and then let them take you on a magical journey.

      Thanks everyone! I’m going to keep up with the hip and glute strengthening exercises. Give it time. Buy some Hokas and say a prayer!

      Hi

      I had my left hip done 2.5 years ago at age 45. I hadn’t run for 5years prior due to arthritis. I started slow and short (1 mile) 6 weeks after surgery and ramped up from there to > 40 miles a week. There were some painful moments, but it always passed. Doc says my left hip looks great. I have run enough with it to wear out the right side. Getting that replaced Friday, as I can no longer run how I want.
