Triathlete since 42 years old, after 2nd Ironman, i was hitting the apex of my endurance career, when I was hit by a pick up truck and knocked across highway. That may have been the start of my hip issues. I retired from the IM game and moved from NJ to CO. There I discovered Dr John Asthalter( Friso, CO and Breckenridge, CO), who practiced ART ( Active Release Therapy ) and helped me to not only come back into the Ironman World, but to go on to finish 7 more IM races, along with participating at USA Triathlon Long Course National Championships. I then retired from the sport, until I learned of the Legacy program. I made my second come back in 2013 and participated in European Championships in Hamburg, Germany to complete my 8th IM. 2014, I completed 2 more in Austria and Maryland. The plan for 2015 was to complete 2 more, which would qualify me for the Legacy Program and qualify me for the World championships in Kona. I completed IM Lake Placid in 2015 after not being able to run train for most of the two months prior to the race. My next scheduled event is IM Florida in 2015. If I am able to complete that, I will qualify for the Legacy Program and qualify for Kona on the basis of completing 12 Ironman Triathlons. I have known of the better part of a decade that I was going to need hip replacement. When I came back to the sport, I toughed it out and ate crow as to the fact that I was so hours slower than I was before. But I am at the point where I except my limitations and I am thankful for the opportunity to realize a long time dream in Kona. When I complete IM FLA ( being a optimist), I will qualify for the Legacy program. My surgeon has told me that I should not run once my hip is replaced, so I have decided to bite the bullet, put my pants and shoes on at weird angles and finish out this task / dream. When completed, I will get my hip done. I have spoken briefly with a couple of members on this site who unequivocally say to don't wait and just get the THR completed because quality of life will be so much better. But I am still leaning towards toughing it out, getting to Kona and then THR and hopefully a return to running…….
