I have been running since 1996, although progressively less in the past few years, partly because of other activities (primarily horseback riding) and, in hindsight, arthritis pain that I ignored but which impacted my enjoyment of running. I used to do triathlons and adventure racing as well. Because I have a very high threshold of pain, it took an incident when I had trouble dismounting a horse (couldn't get my right leg over her back to get off) to get my attention. And it was more lack of function than pain. Sometimes my right leg would just unexpectedly buckle, and I have fallen several times just out walking. In October 2017, an MRI showed grade IV osteoarthritis with significant inflammation. My doctor said usually there are three approaches to treatment, the first being weight loss and exercise, which he said do not apply to me, as I am thin and very active. The second is injections, which he didn't seem to think would be particularly helpful, and finally, hip replacement. At that time, I wasn't ready to even discuss replacement. I have tried acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, various supplements, and in the last couple of months I have become progressively more disabled. Even though I am terrified, I am ready and have scheduled robotic assisted, minimally invasive, anterior right hip THR for May 16. And I am pleasantly surprised at what I am being told to expect--one night stay in hospital, hour and half surgery, and I will climb steps before I leave. I realize things can go wrong and I am not complacent. My surgeon does 10-12 of these per week. My main fear is infection, which from what I've read can occur years later. But there are so many things you can worry about and it is not my nature to do that. I was so excited to find this website, as the doctor and his PA had initially said running was "not recommended ". But the last time I talked to them, it was more, wait till you have really healed. And hearing from those who are running is inspiring me and giving me hope! The alternative was a wheelchair. S9Q3
