Disappointing setback

I had my six-week post-op appointment with my surgeon today. He, in concurrence with my physical therapist, is not comfortable with my recovery and said another several weeks before I can begin returning to a fitness regime. Six weeks before he wants me to go back to my part-time job as a lifeguard. Based on a couple of setbacks I’ve had up to now, my current range of motion, and my muscular strengt…they just feel that the muscles and soft tissue aren’t ready for that yet. It’s so disappointing becasue mentally I was all ready to get back out there.

Be cautious! Don’t forget about the anticoagulant.

At four weeks, and one day post-op I’m not back running quite yet. But I am back to doing many of the things I do around the house. That includes working on things at my workbence in the garage. Where frequently I’m a klutz and end up with small wounds. I’m still on the blood thinner/anticoagulant (in my case it’s simply twice-daily asprine). While working on a small space heater…the fan nicked my thumb knuckle…just a small cut…but boy did it bleed! I finally got the bleeding controlled. Word of advice…make sure you have a good supply of bandaids on hand. (Or in my case…as I frequently do…I “sutured” the small wound with a drop of super glue.)

Navigating HipRunner discussion forum posts

Can anyone offer some instruction on how to navigate these discussion forums? I’m not computer/internet illiterate…there are several online discussion forums that I belong to and participate in. But the set-up of this one is so much different that I can’t figure out how to view the threads. On one page I can see all the responses, but not the original post. Another shows the OPs, but not the responses. There’s got to be a page that lists all the OP threads, which can be ‘clicked’ on and all the responses are presented. OR…could it be that I’m using a tablet (iPad), and the site is better suited for viewing with an actual computer???

Incision scar

Were/Are any of you concerned about the incision scar? Mine was a posterior approach so I’ve got that nice 6″ scar on my left butt cheek. I had such high hopes of being an AARP butt model in a few years. So much for that career move. Seriously…I got my staples out a couple days ago and have been rubbing it down with vitamin E cream…like I did with other surgical incisions in the past. I just don’t want it to heal in some weird way that makes the skin surface uncomfortable when stretched a certain way.

Hip – knee interaction

I’m just 15 days post-op of my THR (left) so I haven’t gotten back into running yet (have been on the stationary bike however). But I’m just wondering if some of the pain I’ve had in my knees for the past few years (while running) might dissipate after the hip replacement. In my case, like many of you, before the THR my posture suffered because I compensated due to the pain and discomfort in the hip. In the last few months before my surgery, that compensation and misalignment was really noticeable and caused real discomfort in my mid- and lower-back. If I stood for even just a few minutes, my back was SCREAMING. But I’m wondering if that same misalignment might have also caused any of my knee pain. Post-op, I can already feel the difference in my back…no pain when standing for short periods. I know I don’t have the knees of a spring chicken, but I’m hoping that some of the pain felt while running might be gone too. Your thoughts.
