9 weeks out

Hi, I am 9 weeks post hip replacement. Couldn’t run for the year before after being mainly a half marathon runner with a few whole ones under my belt, I had a posterior CP U. I am recovering well have been swimming since 2 weeks out and going out on my bike tomorrow for the first time after a few sessions on stationary bike. I still have some muscle weakness due to the surgery, bu am wondering when others started running agin. I am aware I can’t yet and am anxious not to do damage to my other hip or knee. But surgeon says never which isn’t helpful and I know from this site also untrue!

Hi and welcome to the club. I had my THR done in July 2015. Afterward I was overly cautious and waited a year before I starter running again (I couldn’t take it any more). Since then I have not experienced any negative side effects from resuming what I love. In fact my new hip is the only body part that I don’t have problems with now!

Congratulations Clare on what appears to be a successful surgery. I had my THR in October of 2017 and started back to running 4 months later. I started extremely slow, with low mileage interspersed with lots of walking. So far, all is good! I must admit I still run fewer miles per week than before the arthritis kicked in, but I really enjoy all the miles I do run! I haven’t done any halves or marathons since my surgery, except on my zero runner, but I’m not writing them off for the future. My ortho said that marathons wouldn’t wear out my hip; training for marathons would! Who knows!!? Remember to be diligent with your cross training and keep that core strong. More important now than ever!
